Shelby Wild, Executive Director and Founder of Route One Farmers Market
Shelby Wild is the Executive Director and Founder of Route One Farmers Market, a traditional farmers market and a nonprofit created to increase access to local food in California’s Lompoc Valley. After working in school gardens and nutrition education for many years, Shelby became closely involved in Farmers Markets and their potential to break down barriers that exist in her community’s ability to access local food. In 2018, with partnering support from the Lompoc Valley Community Healthcare Organization, Shelby took on the challenge of opening a new farmers market that would focus on equitable access to locally grown food and support farmers' access to local sales.
Route One Farmers Market opened in the spring of 2019 and became a nonprofit organization in the summer of 2020. Able to remain open throughout the extreme challenges that resulted from the pandemic, Shelby led Route One through the resulting restrictions, safety challenges, loss of vendors, and transitioned to curbside contactless pick-up, all while remaining relevant and available to the community in a time of great need. These efforts have solidified Route One as a stable point for safe and equitable food access, as well as a reliable outreach point for community connection during COVID-19 restrictions.
In 2022 Route One launched the first ever Mobile Farmers Market in the Central Coast region to further increase their ability to break down barriers to local food access, continuing to prioritize healthy fresh locally grown food affordable and accessible to the entire community. The Route One Mobile Farmers Market is currently serving multiple locations in the Lompoc Valley offering fresh locally grown produce that can be purchased for 50% off using EBT.
